Hot Wheels is a brand of 1:64, 1:43, 1:18 and 1:50 scale die-cast toy cars introduced by American toy maker Mattel in 1968. It was the main competitor of Matchbox before 1997, when Mattel purchased Tyco Toys, then-owner of Matchbox.
Many auto manufacturers have licensed Hot Wheels to make scale models of their cars, allowing using initial design patterns and detailing. Although Hot Wheels were originally meant for kids and young adults, they’ve become popular with adult lovers, for whom limited edition models are currently made available.
Racing track set
Besides the cars themselves, Mattel made a racing track record (sold individually). Although it would be upgraded during the years, the original trail consisted of a string of brightly colored orange road sections (pieced together to form an oblong( circular race track), using one (or two) “super hitter” (artificial service channels through which cars passed onto the tracks, featuring battery-powered spinning wheels, which would propel the cars along the paths).
Through time, Hot Wheels cars have been collected mostly by children, but in the last 15 years[vague] there’s been a rise in the amount of mature collectors. Mattel estimates that 41 million children grew up playing with all the toys, the typical collector has over 1,550 automobiles, and kids between the ages of 5 and 15 have an average of 41 automobiles. Most believe the collecting trend started with the Treasure Hunts in 1995. Mike Strauss was known as the father of Hot Wheels amassing; he’s arranged two collectors’ events annually in some form since 1986. The first event was the Annual Hot Wheels Collectors Convention, usually held every year at the fall. The conference occurred in various locations around the nation until 2001, when the first Annual Hot Wheels Collectors Nationals was placed together. Ever since then, the Conventions are held each year in southern California. The Hot Wheels Collectors Nationals rotate among cities outside of California through the spring. Strauss has also released the Rs Hot Wheels Newsletter since 1986 and has been among the very first to unite collectors all over the world. He also writes the Tomart’s Guide To Hot Wheels, a publication listing history, auto descriptions and values, which can be used by nearly every collector to find out more about the hobby and also their collection. Strauss sold his group from 2011 and retired in the Hot Wheels Newsletter.
