It was the key competitor of Matchbox until 1997, when Mattel purchased Tyco Toys, then-owner of Matchbox.
Although Hot Wheels were initially meant for children and young adults, so they have become popular with mature lovers, for whom limited edition versions are currently made available.
Racing track Collection
In addition to the cars themselves, Mattel produced a racing track set (sold separately). Even though it could be updated throughout time, the first track consisted of a collection of brightly colored orange street sections (pieced together to make an oblong, circular race track), with one (or sometimes two) “super hitter” (artificial service channels by which cars passed onto the tracks, including battery-powered spinning wheels, which could propel the cars along the paths).
Through the years, Hot Wheels cars have been gathered mostly by children, but at the previous 15 years[vague] there has been a growth in the number of mature collectors. Mattel estimates that 41 million kids grew up playing with the toys, the typical collector has over 1,550 automobiles, and kids between the ages of 5 and 15 have a mean of 41 cars. Most believe the collecting craze started with the Treasure Hunts in 1995. Mike Strauss was known as the father of Hot Wheels collecting; he’s arranged two collectors’ occasions each year in some form since 1986. The first event was the yearly Hot Wheels Collectors Convention, usually held every year at the autumn. The convention happened in various locations around the country until 2001, once the first Annual Hot Wheels Collectors Nationals was put together. Since that time, the Conventions are held each year in southern California. The Hot Wheels Collectors Nationals rotate one of cities out of California through the spring. Strauss has also released the Rs Hot Wheels Newsletter since 1986 and has been one of the first to combine collectors all over the world. In addition, he writes the Tomart’s Guide To Hot Wheels, a book listing history, car descriptions and values, which can be used by nearly every collector to find out more about the hobby along with their collection. Strauss sold his set in 2011 and retired in the Hot Wheels Newsletter.
