It had been the primary competitor of Matchbox until 1997, when Mattel purchased Tyco Toys, then-owner of Matchbox.
Many automobile manufacturers have licensed Hot Wheels to make scale models of their cars, allowing the use of original layout blueprints and detailing. Although Hot Wheels were originally intended for kids and young adults, they’ve become popular with adult collectors, such as limited edition models are now made available.
Racing track set
Besides the cars themselves, Mattel made a racing track record (sold separately). Even though it could be updated throughout the years, the first track consisted of a string of brightly colored orange road segments (pieced together to form an oblong( circular race track), together with one (or sometimes two) “super chargers” (faux service channels by which cars passed onto the paths, including battery-powered spinning wheels, which would propel the cars along the paths).
Through time, Hot Wheels cars are gathered mostly by kids, but at the last 15 years[vague] there has been an increase in the number of mature collectors. Mattel estimates that 41 million children grew up playing with all the toys, the typical collector has over 1,550 cars, and kids between the ages of 5 and 15 have an average of 41 cars. Most believe the collecting craze began with the Treasure Hunts at 1995. Mike Strauss has been called the father of Hot Wheels amassing; he’s arranged two collectors’ occasions annually in some form since 1986. The first event was the yearly Hot Wheels Collectors Convention, usually held every year at the autumn. The convention happened in a variety of locations around the country until 2001, once the very first Annual Hot Wheels Collectors Nationals was set together. Since then, the Conventions are held every year in southern California. The Hot Wheels Collectors Nationals rotate one of cities out of California during the spring. Strauss has also published the quarterly Hot Wheels Newsletter since 1986 and has been one of the first to combine collectors all around the world. He also writes on the Tomart’s Guide To Hot Wheels, a book listing history, car descriptions and worth, which can be used by nearly every collector to learn more about the hobby and also their own collection. Strauss sold his group in 2011 and retired in the Hot Wheels Newsletter.
