It had been the primary competitor of Matchbox before 1997, when Mattel bought Tyco Toys, then-owner of Matchbox.
Even though Hot Wheels were originally intended for children and young adults, they have become popular with adult lovers, for whom limited edition versions are currently made accessible.
Racing track set
Along with the cars themselves, Mattel produced a racing track record (sold separately). Although it would be updated during the years, the first trail consisted of a series of brightly colored orange road segments (pieced together to make an oblong, circular race track), using one (or sometimes two) “super chargers” (artificial service stations through which cars passed onto the tracks, including battery-powered spinning wheels, which would propel the cars across the tracks).
Through the years, Hot Wheels cars have been collected mostly by children, but at the past 15 years[vague] there has been a growth in the amount of mature collectors. Mattel estimates that 41 million children grew up playing with all the toys, the ordinary collector has over 1,550 automobiles, and kids between the ages of 5 and 15 have an average of 41 cars. Most consider the collecting trend began with the Treasure Hunts at 1995. Mike Strauss was called the father of Hot Wheels amassing; he’s organized two collectors’ events each year in some form since 1986. The first event was the Annual Hot Wheels Collectors Convention, generally held each year in the fall. The convention happened in a variety of locations around the nation until 2001, once the first Annual Hot Wheels Collectors Nationals was placed together. Since that time, the Conventions are held every year in southern California. The Hot Wheels Collectors Nationals rotate among cities out of California through the spring. Strauss has also released the Rs Hot Wheels Newsletter since 1986 and was among the very first to unite collectors all over the world. He also writes the Tomart’s Guide To Hot Wheels, a publication listing history, car descriptions and worth, which can be used by nearly every collector to learn more about the hobby along with their own collection. Strauss sold his collection from 2011 and retired from the Hot Wheels Newsletter.
