It was the primary competitor of Matchbox before 1997, when Mattel bought Tyco Toys, then-owner of Matchbox.

Racing track Collection
Along with the cars themselves, Mattel made a racing track record (sold individually). Though it could be upgraded throughout time, the initial track consisted of a series of brightly colored orange street segments (pieced together to form an oblong, circular race track), using one (or two) “super walkers” (faux service stations through which cars passed onto the paths, including battery-powered spinning wheels, which would propel the cars along the tracks).
Through the years, Hot Wheels cars are collected mostly by kids, but in the previous 15 years[vague] there’s been a rise in the number of adult collectors. Mattel estimates that 41 million kids grew up playing with all the toys, the normal collector has over 1,550 cars, and kids between the ages of 5 and 15 have a mean of 41 automobiles. Most consider the collecting trend started with the Treasure Hunts in 1995. Mike Strauss has been known as the father of Hot Wheels amassing; he has arranged two collectors’ occasions annually in some sort since 1986. The very first event was the Annual Hot Wheels Collectors Convention, normally held every year at the autumn. The convention occurred in a variety of locations around the country until 2001, once the first Annual Hot Wheels Collectors Nationals was placed together. The Hot Wheels Collectors Nationals rotate among cities outside of California during the spring. Strauss has also published the quarterly Hot Wheels Newsletter since 1986 and was one of the first to unite collectors all around the world. He also writes the Tomart’s Guide To Hot Wheels, a publication listing history, automobile descriptions and worth, which can be used by virtually every collector to find out more about the hobby and also their collection. Strauss sold his group from 2011 and retired from the Hot Wheels Newsletter.
